Overview

The Industrial Design intern is responsible for the design and development of products that optimize functionality, aesthetics, ergonomics, and user experience while ensuring manufacturability and cost efficiency. This role collaborates closely with engineering, manufacturing, marketing, and customers to create innovative solutions that enhance product performance and customer value across trailer and truck body platforms.

 

The Industrial Design intern integrates industrial design principles with engineering requirements to develop concepts from ideation through production implementation.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the engineers with designing the product.
  • Assists the engineers with data acquisition, data analysis, and presentation.
  • Assists engineers with evaluation of test equipment for functionality, repeatability, and safety.
  • Assists Engineers with small-scale testing and materials, fasteners, adhesives and electrical components. 
  • Assists with MRO restocking and facility upkeep.
  • Assists with maintenance of databases and spreadsheets.
  • Assists creation of procedures for testing activities.
  • Other Duties as assigned.

Anticipated Projects:

  • Assist new product development projects.
  • Develop prototype designs of new concepts in new product development projects.
  • Develop innovative and aesthetic concepts to assist manufacturing ergonomics and end user experience.
  • Explore welding techniques, alternative materials and joining techniques.
  • Design of electrical components.
  • Assist in competitive analysis.

Qualifications

Education / Requirements

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related field.
  • Skills: CAD and technical drawing, engineering fundamentals, bill of materials skills, problem solving and analytical thinking.
  • Experience with rendering and visualization tools (KeyShot, Blender, Adobe Suite, or similar).
  • Manufacturing awareness with welding, sheet metal, assembly processes, tolerances is valuable.
  • Ability to translate user needs into technical solutions.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective communication and ability to work independently and with others.
  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, with excellent written, verbal, and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

  • Work environment: Spend 85% of time in office environment and 15% of time in manufacturing environment. May be exposed to possible shop hazards including high noise, heavy machinery and shop traffic. Frequent use of a computer
